When I'm gone, I want this van to become a PLACE TO WRITE for a writer, who, like me, was once forbidden to write in her own home and was treated with disdain, bullying, and was even terrorized multiple times. I, or my executor, may hold an essay contest to find the right person.
This is a Ford E-350 passenger van converted to a camper van, considered a Class B. With a V-10 engine and a turtle top, it has about 21,000 miles on it. I am its third owner. The first owner had a hot air balloon and used this van as a crew vehicle. The hydraulic lift on the back was for transporting the gondola. I believe he raised funds from sponsors. The next owner was a retired science teacher and his Canadian wife in upstate New York. They eventually moved to Florida not far from where I live now.
And I, as the third owner, bought this van for my 65th birthday. It was a lifelong dream - since 5th grade - to own a camper van. An American, I lived for almost 3 decades in Canada, and owned a personal public relations consulting firm whose clients were practitioners and experts in their fields.
In it, I've traveled from Erie Pennsylvania to Philadelphia and back for a week-long seminar, and back and forth from Erie to the Tampa Bay are where I now live. It has been sitting, undriven for 2 years and needs work to get it roadworthy. I also want to tear out the interior walls and re-insulate them so it's also livable through any weather and temperature.
And why do I need a van to write and publish books? First, I have no other vehicle and I will need the van to get to speaking engagements and for a press and media tour to promote my books. It would save me on hotel expenses. And second, with my paltry income – less than $9500 a month which only pays my current accommodation expenses – I may need to give up my apartment to be able to afford dental and health care. My van would then be my full-time home until I can no longer live independent.
